Cllr. Steve Campkin

Steve was first elected to Ashford Borough Council in May 2019 as one of our first two Borough Councillors. He was re-elected in May 2023 with a hugely increased majority.

Steve lives in Willesborough and works as a self-employed gardener.  He is a really active member of the local community, and was the co-founder of Wombles of Willesborough, a local community litter picking group. Steve is also a fantastic drummer, having played in numerous bands over the years, but gave up his drum sticks to really focus on local politics.

Climate change is the issue that drives Steve. He is proud of Ashford Borough Council’s work to tackle climate change in ways that focus on improving people’s lives. The solar canopies over the Stour Centre car park were Steve’s idea, and, he hopes, just another step towards a greener, more ambitious Ashford. Looking ahead, he wants to see many more trees planted across the borough alongside a major increase in domestic solar energy, helping create healthier neighbourhoods and a more resilient future.

Steve loves trees. He’s mad about them. They’re central to what makes the area special and to his vision for its future. One of his favourite local places is Frogs Orchard, a community space that really shows the importance of nature, biodiversity and bringing people together. Outside politics, Steve can happily spend hours talking about eco-gardening and the small changes that make gardens better for both people and wildlife.
